There are many different ways in which humans have neglected to take responsibility for the environment, and as I have researched and begun my transition into a more eco-friendly lifestyle, I often question my use of plastic. As a result, one thing that really began to bother me was the amount of plastic toothbrushes that I used and disposed of. Then, when I heard that there were places along the beach where discarded plastic toothbrushes were washing up on shore, I began to wonder if there was a better way. With this in mind, I set off on a search for a healthy, eco-friendly alternative. After doing a bit of research, I found the answer to my question; bamboo toothbrushes! Because bamboo is a highly renewable resource and is biodegradable, it provides a nature-friendly alternative to harsh, chemical-laden plastic toothbrushes.
But is it Healthy?
As always with my lifestyle changes, I prefer to do my homework. As I am dedicated to maintaining my health in a responsible way, I was determined that I would not make the switch if it put my dental health at risk. For example, I was concerned that a bamboo brush might not clean my teeth effectively. Would the handle give my mouth splinters? What if the bristles were too hard and damaged my gums/teeth? With all these questions in mind, I decided to search for some answers. To be honest, I was surprised at how difficult some of them were to obtain. However, with time and patience, I found answers and was pleasantly surprised by the competence of the bamboo toothbrush!
The (Calculated) Leap!
Satisfied that the brush would be sufficient to aid me in my daily hygiene routine, I felt confident that I could make the switch. Nonetheless, I continued to stall, as many do when facing some sort of change, and it was not until this past Christmas that I made the switch. My wonderful family, who supports me in my eco-friendly endeavors, gave me a beautiful set of four bamboo toothbrushes. I couldn’t have been more excited! With the brushes in hand, at last I made the switch. Now, having used the brushes for a little over a month, I am pleased to report my experience:
- The texture of the brush handle is different, but easily adjusted to
- The brush is medium/hard bristled, but not damaging
- My teeth are cleaned effectively
- The handle has not given me any splinters
My Brand of Choice
My current brand of choice is Mother’s Vault, and I have been very satisfied with the quality of the brushes. The bristles of the brush are BPA-free and the natural appearance of the bamboo is very aesthetically pleasing. One of my favorite things about this brand is that even the packaging is biodegradable, making it a guilt-free purchase. And as if all of this weren’t enough, a portion of the proceeds are donated to charity!
I am very pleased with my transition and experience with bamboo toothbrushes. I have every intention of continuing to use them in the future, and I am overjoyed by the fact that I will no longer be contributing to the massive environmental waste that plastic toothbrushes contribute to every year.
